How to choose a garment steamer: what to pay attention to

When choosing a garment steamer, you should consider the following parameters::

The volume of the water tank;

Possibility of horizontal steaming;

Water requirements;

The manufacturer is also important.

Types of steamer for clothing

From the point of view of design and scope of use, garment steamers are divided into three types::

Manual steamers

How to choose a garment steamer

Manual steamers are compact devices that are designed mainly for taking care of clothes away from home: on business trips, trips, etc. They are irreplaceable in situations where you need to quickly clean up crumpled things.

Dignities

Compact, small size;

Ability to run on battery power.

Disadvantages

Often, manual steamers are suitable for processing 1-2 items of clothing. But they are not designed to handle the entire wardrobe;

Small volume of water tank;

Outdoor steamers

How to choose a garment steamer

Floor steamers are equipped with a large water tank and increased power, so they are suitable for processing an increased amount of clothing.

Dignities

They can process several items of clothing per use cycle;

They have a high-power heating element;

Models with steam pressure can handle dense fabrics.

Disadvantages

High current consumption;

Not suitable for use away from home.

Floor steamers come in two types: gravity steamers and steam pressure steamers.

Gravity-operated floor steamers

How to choose a garment steamer

Gravity floor steamers structurally and from the point of view of technology of use are a kind of electric kettle. The water poured into the container is heated to a boil. After that, the steam is sent through the connected tube to the iron, which is used to process clothes. Self-flowing floor steamers are suitable for working with thin and light fabrics, as well as processing curtains and other decorative fabric elements.

Dignities

Simple and reliable design.

Disadvantages

Not suitable for processing dense materials;

Unstable steam pressure.

Steam pressure steamers

How to choose a garment steamer

Steam pressure steamers are suitable for processing dense fabrics, that is, they can be used to “refresh” jackets, jeans, even cleaning upholstered furniture. Their design includes a special drive that provides a high intensity of hot air flow.

Floor steamers with steam pressure are a good solution for cleaning and processing clothes made of dense fabrics. But because of the short duration of the “intensive mode”, they are unlikely to be suitable for cleaning the entire wardrobe.

Dignities

Can handle both thin and dense fabrics;

Suitable for processing upholstered furniture.

Disadvantages

Unstable steam pressure. In the intensive flow mode, the device can only work for a few minutes, after which it becomes ” self-flowing»;

The complexity of the design, which leads to some unreliability;

High requirements for the quality of the water being filled in;

Combined steamers

How to choose a garment steamer

If manual and floor steamers are designed for easy handling of clothing (including refreshing and smoothing small wrinkles), then combined ones are suitable even for removing dirt. In the vast majority of cases, these are either steam cleaners with a steaming function, or steam cleaners with a steam cleaner function. But regardless of the type of device, they are very intense.

Combined steamers are suitable for people who need not only to refresh their clothes, but also to clean them from various contaminants. And they will also be an excellent solution for the care of upholstered furniture.

Dignities

High steaming intensity (flow pressure more than 3 bar, density more than 70 grams per minute);

Can be used for cleaning clothes;

It can be used with thick fabrics and upholstered furniture;

Disadvantages

High requirements for the quality of the water being filled in;

Which garment steamer to choose

When choosing a steamer for clothes, you should first take into account the planned use and review the wardrobe:

If you want to maintain a flawless appearance even on a business trip, the ideal solution is a manual steamer;

If the wardrobe mainly uses clothes made of light fabrics, you should buy a floor steamer of the gravity type;

If you plan to steam jeans, jackets, coats, and other clothing made of dense fabrics, a model with steam pressure is suitable;

If you plan to clean curtains and draperies – floor self-cleaning;

If you plan to clean upholstered furniture – floor with steam pressure or combined;

If you plan not only to refresh your clothes, but also to remove dirt from them – combined.

A universal solution is a floor-mounted one with steam pressure, but it is not suitable for use outside the home.

Main selection criteria

How to choose a garment steamer

The main parameters that determine the operational and practical qualities of the steamer are::

The volume of the water tank;

Possibility of horizontal steaming;

Power output

The power of the steamer determines two parameters – the start-up speed (boiling water) and the steam intensity. The first characteristic is affected by the performance of the heating element. The steam intensity is determined by the drive power and is measured in the pressure of the hot air flow.

Usually, the technical specifications of the steamer indicate the power consumption, not the effective power. In most cases, these parameters are interrelated. The higher the steamer’s power consumption, the more efficient it is.

For the care of thin and light fabrics, steamers with a power of 1-1.5 kW are quite suitable. If processing of dense materials or upholstered furniture is required, it is recommended to choose models with a power of 1.5-2 kW.

Also, the higher the volume of the tank, the greater the power of the steamer should be. For example, for models with a liquid container capacity of up to 0.2 liters, heaters with a power of up to 1 kW are quite suitable. But for devices with a 2.5-liter tank, it is better to choose steamers designed for 2 kW and higher.

Practical implementation is shown in the intensity of steam supply. The higher it is (measured in grams per minute), the better. For example, steamers at 30 g / min will cope only with the most airy lace, and at 70 g / min-they will easily refresh tight jeans.

The vapor pressure

Parameter that determines the practical properties of steamers. If its value is less than 1 bar, the hot air flow will be able to penetrate exceptionally thin fabrics.

Devices with a steam pressure of about 2 bar are suitable for cleaning and refreshing fairly dense fabrics, but still can not cope with jeans or tweeds. For such materials, a steamer with a capacity of 3 bar or more will be required.

The volume of the water tank

The lower the volume of the tank, the less clothes can be steamed in one cycle of operation. So, portable devices designed for less than 0.2 liters are able to process only one item of clothing – for example, a shirt.

But, at the same time, the higher the volume of the tank – the larger the dimensions of the device. Therefore, for portable steamers, the optimal tank capacity is from 0.3 to 0.5 liters. but floor – standing ones can be equipped with a large tank-over 1 liter.

Possibility of horizontal steaming

This is an important selection criterion for manual and combined steamers. Floor ones can usually work in any position of the iron.

However, if the purpose of buying a steamer is just to refresh clothes or smooth out creases on them, then this function is not needed. These processes are most effective when the shirt or trousers hang loosely.

However, if you plan to process clothes lying horizontally or upholstered furniture surfaces, it is advisable to choose models that support working in this mode.

Equipment

The most important additional attachments for steamers are the brush and clip. The first one is designed for cleaning dirt from the surface of the fabric. The clip allows you to put arrows on the trousers (or rather, update them, since new ones are created exclusively by the iron).

Additional selection criteria

How to choose a garment steamer

Additional parameters that affect the performance of the device, it is possible to allocate:

Battery life;

Availability of heating iron;

Requirements for the water used;

Possibility of adding water without turning off the device.

Battery lifefor a hand-held portable steamer, if not specified by the manufacturer, it is calculated from the flow rate and volume of the water tank. The higher it is, the better.

Availability of heating ironallows you to get rid of the appearance of droplets (condensation) on its surface and therefore provides better steaming without wetting clothes.

Requirements for the water usedusually specified in the instructions for the steamer. Most models in the mid-to upper price range can work with any liquid. At the same time, some steamers support the use of only purified or even distilled water.

Since distilled water is quite difficult to get at home and on a business trip, it is worth checking compatibility with the” regular liquid ” in advance.

Intensity adjustment– useful feature. Although, judging by user reviews, most use only one mode – the maximum. If the steamer supports several intensity modes, it is desirable that their controller is located on the handle of the device.

Automatic shut-offmake use of a steamer is more safe. So, the device can turn off after some time of inactivity or after emptying the water tank. In both cases, this will not only extend the service life of the steamer, but also reduce the risk of spontaneous combustion.

Possibility of adding water without disconnecting the device– very useful and important function, both for manual and floor steamers. But it is only practical if you plan to process a large number of clothes.

How much do garment steamers cost?

The cost of the steamer depends on its type, capacity and volume of the tank.

So, prices for manual steamers start from several hundred rubles, but the vast majority of models are in the price range of 1-2 thousand rubles.

The price of floor steamers starts from 2 thousand rubles, the vast majority of models are in the price range of 4-7 thousand rubles.

Prices for combined steamers start from 3-4 thousand rubles, most of the models are in the price range of 8-15 thousand rubles.
